In the most challenging of times, we built this special place from the ground up while raising our children, pouring our hearts into every detail. Now, more than 30 years later, what started as a dream has flourished into the ‘hidden gem of Connecticut.’ Our family has grown to include not just children, grandchildren, and in-laws, but also YOU—our cherished guests. IN LOVING MEMORY - JAMES "jIM"MACKIN
Last year (2024) was a sorrowful time for the Mackin family and our extended Countryside family. Our beloved patriarch, James Mackin, co-founder of Countryside Campground, passed away on June 29th. His loss leaves a profound void in our hearts, yet his legacy will forever remain woven into the very fabric of Countryside.
Jim was known for many things—a hardworking man with an infectious joy for life, a kindhearted soul who always put others before himself, and a man of immense skill who could do just about anything. His journey began as a farmer, but throughout his life, he took on many roles, working as a machinist, truck driver, and a concrete and excavation contractor. However, his proudest accomplishment was building Countryside Campground from the ground up with his wife of 61 years, Linda, and their children. What started in 1972 as a dream soon became much more than a campground—it became a sanctuary for all who set foot on its grounds.
Jim had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome, from families on vacation to those needing a helping hand. He freely gave of his time, compassion, and generosity, ensuring that Countryside was not just a place to camp but a home away from home. One longtime camper fondly recalled, “Both Jim and Linda went out of their way to make sure that our stay was enjoyable and treated us like family. Jim will definitely be missed!”
Though we grieve this tremendous loss, we also celebrate the life of an extraordinary man who poured his heart into everything he did. His laughter, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his family and community will never be forgotten.
